    Up and Running, Sort of.

” Remember how far you’ve come, not just how far you have to go. You are not where you want to be, but neither are you where you used to be.” Unknown The first 2 weeks I was home went by in a flash and before I knew it I was on my way to my first out patient physical therapy appointment. My mom drove me since I was not allowed to drive. When I arrived and met my new physical therapist I knew immediately that I was in good hands. Over the next 6 months my PT and I worked together 3 times a week. And amazingly I slowly…

    Im Home… Now What.

I had waited so long to come home, it was what made me push so hard in rehab. But then I got home… My walked barely fit through our doors, I had to step over a large ledge to get into my shower, my bed was too high for me to get into. and that was just the big things that made being home hard. My first night home I was truly happy. I laid next to Michael all propped up with pillows and tried to sleep. But my sleep schedule was super wonky. I had been in the hospital for a month where they wake you up all the…

    Discharge Time!

“Its okay to be scared. Being scared means your about to do something really, really brave.” -Unknown- As my second week of rehab rolled around I was really starting to enjoy my therapies. I was seeing progress, little as it was, it was still there. But there was always something to remind me of the work I still had ahead of me. One afternoon as I was working with my new physical therapist and she asked if I ever sit on the ground to play with my kids. Well i do so I answered yes. She then pulls out a mat and tells me to sit on the ground. One…

    Baby Steps!

Moving If you haven’t ever had the pleasure of visiting an In Patient Rehab facility let me explain what they are. It is a unit inside of the hospital where patients are re-taught how to live and cope with their new disabilities. In my case I was relearning how to walk and function as a mom and wife. They are very similar to Nursing homes in the fact that everyone has their own home like room and is encouraged to go to the communal dinning room for all meals. It is mostly elderly people in these units but there is the odd case like myself that end up there. When…

    Second Times a Charm.

Endurance (noun) – The Power to withstand pain or hardship; the ability or strength to continue despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions. Now my first experience with anesthesia was.’t all that bad. I woke up, was a little goofy, then was fine. This time around was a whole different story… When I opened my eyes I immediately felt a searing pain in and on the left side of my head. I moved a hand to my head and noticed my face was sticky. Turning my head every so slightly to try and figure out what was happening. It was blood, and not just a little blood it was everywhere! The…

    Awakening

The Hazy Beginning Have you ever had surgery and been under anesthesia? It doesn’t matter if its a major surgery or a minor surgery, because when you wake up its all the same. I had never really had surgery before so when I woke up I felt really out of it. Michael and Julrie were the first to come back to the recovery room when I woke up. I kept asking them the same 3 or 4 questions over and over again. It got to the point that Michael actually started counting how many times I went through my loop. My mom and dad came back next and were so…

    Preparing for Surgery

Why the Rush? After hearing that I did in fact need surgery I told the Dr that I would like to wait till mid or end of December. You know meet my deductible and all that. But that wasnt going to fly. My surgeon felt that if we left the Syrinx for too much longer the chance of it growing and doing more permanent damage or even paralysis was high. So we agreed on November 16, 2016 as my surgery date. At this point we Briefly went over what the surgery would entail. It was a small incision at the nape of the neck, then carefully dissect the spinal cord…

    After the Diagnosis.

What is this thing? If any of you have been on the receiving end of a strange and/or unknown diagnosis, I am sure you can understand the flood of emotions I felt after being told I had a syrinx. First of all I was extremely grateful that I did not have Multiple Sclerosis. Then came the shock, what is this thing that I have growing inside of my spinal cord? So I did what every doctor or health professional tells you not to do, I googled it… After reading article after article for what seemed like hours I called my husband. I was in full blown panic mode! My husband…

    Life as I knew it.

The Beginning. Life is a funny thing. You never really know where you are going to end up. Let me tell you I never imagined my life would be where it is today. I am Ciera Young and over the new few blog posts I will chronicle for you the recent events in my life that have taken me on quite the crazy ride. After the birth of my daughter, Evey, I started to experience some strange and concerning symptoms. I was getting frequent headaches, numbness in both my hands, and i noticed my hands were losing strength and dexterity. I consulted my PCP but she was unsure what could be…
